From Artist Statement:

“We seek significance and emotional safety by hiding behind or projecting through coverings in many forms. Our own skin is one form, a boundary that maintains our internal equilibrium while simultaneously protecting us from external assaults. There are times when our skin and the features beneath it betray us, revealing our innermost emotions, rendering us vulnerable in the eyes of others.

With my art, figurative layers of wax and paint on various coverings become an interface between our private and public selves. Flesh-like paper is crocheted into a cover-up, gilded plaster is molded into a mask, and expressive marks on doors and translucent paper belie struggles and joys alike – emotional moments where we navigate our social environment and seek focus. Examination of the artwork offer the opportunity for self-reflection, with the hope of bringing insight into the nature of human engagement.”

Seeking Focus will be on display at the Umbrella Gallery from April 28-May 27.

The opening reception will be held on Saturday, April 28 from 6-8pm.
